In Cabo Verde, agriculture occupies less land and contributes less to GDP and merchandise exports than in most African countries. Meanwhile, its contribution to the economy has been declining in past years.
Drawing on easily available information, this country-risk brief presents a high-level quantitative analysis of the agricultural risk profile of Cabo Verde. The brief highlights the role agriculture plays in the economy, the rate of growth between 1993 and 2010 and the level of vulnerability. It also provides background information on the various forms of risks including production, market, and macro level risks. The analysis identifies production risks as greater than output price risks, in terms of both frequency and severity. Droughts occur more frequently than floods due to Cabo Verde’s reliance on rainfall events.
