Risk Management Mechanisms Towards Structured Grain Trade and Food Security in Eastern and Southern Africa

Abstract:

On 16-18th December 2014, stakeholders from the private sector, government agencies, bilateral and multilateral organisations, farmer associations and development partners across Eastern and Southern Africa region met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to dialogue and identify specific trade, food and nutrition risk management interventions to boost food availability, affordability and access.

This bulletin synthesises the discussions and key points from the policy dialogue workshop, which aimed at assisting the stakeholders to build consensus and align on their roles in risk management across the region. Specifically, the workshop was intended to: a) review the existing risks and risk management mechanism available in the region; b) share experience of the successes of risk management strategies across the value chain; c) review the impacts of various interventions on the value chain risk management and assess their role in risk management; and d) dialogue, propose and recommend for practical and robust frameworks to mitigate risks at different levels.
